Tips for smart use
A calm list of practical tips — on dosing, edibles, alcohol, and what to do if cannabis turns against you.
Cannabis (hash and weed) has been part of human cultures for centuries. It comes from the hemp plant, the effect lasts two to four hours, and most people end up cheerful and relaxed. As with any other recreational substance, it’s worth keeping a few things in view. Hence these tips.
Before you start
- Use cannabis for enjoyment. A joint doesn’t solve any problems.
- Some varieties are stronger than others — higher THC content. People who smoke a lot know exactly when they’ve had enough and when to stop. First time? You don’t know that yet. Just ask us — we’re happy to help you find what fits.
- Little experience with cannabis? Don’t drink alcohol alongside it.
During use
- If you smoke every day, try a few days off.
- Cannabis changes your concentration. Don’t use it at school, at work, or in traffic.
- With edibles, the dose you’re taking in is hard to gauge. Start small. It can take 45 to 90 minutes before it kicks in — wait that out, don’t reach for more right away, otherwise you’ll find yourself in deeper than you wanted.
- Smoking cannabis releases compounds (tar, carbon monoxide) that are harmful to your health.
- If you mix it with tobacco, you’re also smoking tobacco. Nicotine is addictive.
Good to know
- Cannabis sometimes lands badly. You feel nauseous or anxious. Find a quiet spot, eat or drink something sweet (a glass of orange juice helps), and remember that it passes within about an hour. Don’t panic.
- On medication and want to use cannabis? Talk to a doctor first. During pregnancy: better not at all.
- Never buy on the street. Find a reputable coffeeshop.
- Don’t take cannabis across the border.
